Abijah Beckwith


Abijah Beckwith was an American politician from New York.

Life

He was the son of Dan Beckwith and Ann Beckwith. In 1805, he married Lurena Chadwick, and they had 9 children. About 1806, the family removed to a place in Herkimer County which in 1812 became part of the Town of Columbia.
Beckwith was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1816–17 and 1823. He was Clerk of Herkimer County from 1826 to 1831.
He was a Democratic member of the New York State Senate from 1835 to 1838, sitting in the 58th, 59th, 60th and 61st New York State Legislatures.
He was again a member of the State Assembly in 1847. In 1848, he became a Free Soiler and later a Republican.
In the 1860 presidential election, he was a presidential elector for Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamiln.
He was buried at the Cemetery in Cedarville.
