Abigail Lindo


Abigail Lindo was a British lexicographer. She was the first British Jew to compile a Hebrew-English dictionary.

Life

Lindo was born in London in 1803. She was one of the eighteen children of David Abarbanel Lindo.
She came to prominence after she created an English-Hebrew dictionary for her own use. Encouraged by her uncle, she published her work in 1837. She was the first British Jew to compile and publish a Hebrew-English dictionary. The list was later extended. One source says that ""A Hebrew-English and English-Hebrew Dictionary" by Lindo was published in 1846.
Lindo died in London in 1848.
