2d Transportation Support Battalion is a Camp Lejeune, North Carolina logistics unit which falls under Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2d Marine Logistics Group. It was reactivated 1 October 2014. Its primary mission is to "Provide transportation and throughput support for the II Marine Expeditionary Force to facilitate the distribution of personnel, equipment, and supplies by air, ground, and sea to provide the MEF transportation and throughput support for the distribution of supplies, personnel, and equipment."
History
Origins
The origins of 2d Transportation Support Battalion can be traced back to the histories of two battalions: 2d Landing Support Battalion and 8th Motor Transport Battalion. 2d Landing Support Battalion was originally activated in the 1941 as 2d Service Battalion located in San Diego, California. That unit deployed to Wellington, New Zealand and participated in the World War II Campaigns of Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa.-In July 1946, 2d Service Battalion relocated to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In 1949, the unit was reactivated and re-designated as 2d Force Service Battalion. In the 1950s, the unit trained throughout the Caribbean and in 1958, was once again re-designated as 2d Service Battalion. Elements of the unit participated in our nation's response to the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. In May 1976, the unit was renamed 2d Landing Support Battalion. 2d Landing Support Battalion participated in a variety of deployments and commitments to include Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and Humanitarian Relief Efforts in Central America. 8th Motor Transport Battalion was activated in December 1950 in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The unit was reassigned from Service Command to Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic in 1960. 8th Motor Transport Battalion became part of 2d Force Service Support Group in December 1975. The unit has participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, as well as Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti. On 30 March 2000, 8th Motor Transport Battalion was deactivated. 2d Transportation Battalion was reactivated 1 October 2014 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 2. Since then, 2d TSB has regularly provided motor transport companies, landing support platoons, and heavy equipment capabilities to Second Marine Expeditionary Force. The Marines of 2d Transportation Support Battalion continue to live up to the battalion's motto: “Workhorse of the MEF.“

Activated 11 December 1950 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as 8th Motor Transport Battalion, and assigned to Service Command, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic.
Detached during July 1956 from Service Command and reassigned to Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic.
Reassigned during August 1960 to Force Troops, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic.
Redesignated 1 December 1975 as 8th Motor Transport Battalion, 2d Force Service Support Group, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic.
Elements participated in humanitarian and disaster relief efforts, Southeastern U.S., in response to Hurricane Hugo, September–October 1989.
1992–Present
Elements participated in Humanitarian and disaster relief efforts, Florida, in response to Hurricane Andrew, August–September 1992.
Participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Southwest Asia, December 1990- April 1991.
Participated in Operation Uphold Democracy, Haiti, September 1994- March 1995.
Elements participated in humanitarian and disaster relief efforts, Honduras, in response to Hurricane Mitch, November–December 1998.
Deactivated 30 March 2000.
Reactivated 1 October 2014 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as 2d Transportation Support Battalion and assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 2.
2d Transportation Support Battalion received the 2017 National Defense Transportation Association Military Unit Award:
"From 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016, 2d Transportation Support Battalion consistently provided responsive and effective transportation and logistical support to units, exercises, and operations across the II Marine Expeditionary Force. 2d Transportation Support Battalion’s efforts were critical to the work-up and deployment of numerous units, while simultaneously distributing essential supplies to units and organizations across Camp Lejeune; Consistently excelling in its missions while overcoming a host of equipment and manpower challenges. In addition to providing a critical distribution capabilities for II MEF supply chains, 2d TSB consistently provided augmentation to support exercises and unit deployments. The support provided by 2d TSB filled critical roles in the concept of logistics for those exercises and was essential to the SPMAGTF-CR and 22nd MEU missions. In addition to the highly effective and responsive logistical support provided, 2d TSB also played key leadership roles in developing enterprise solutions to enhance air cargo movements and ground mobility in Cold weather environments. 2d TSB’s impact on Marine distribution capabilities was exceptional and worthy of the 2017 National Defense Transportation Association military unit award."
