2019 Campeonato Gaúcho

The 2019 Campeonato da Primeira Divisão de Futebol Profissional da FGF, better known as the 2019 Campeonato Gaúcho, is the 99th season of Rio Grande do Sul's top-flight football league. The season will begin on 20 January and end on 21 April. The defending champions are Grêmio, who won their 37th title by beating first phase and Taça Centenário champions Brasil de Pelotas in the final. VAR will be used for the first time in the tournament's history, being used for both legs of the final and any Grenal matches that take place.

Format

The Gauchão is contested between 12 teams, who first play in a single round-robin. From the first phase, the best 8 teams qualify for the final stage, a two-legged knockout bracket, and the bottom 2 teams are relegated to the Série A2. Three places are available in the 2020 Copa do Brasil, while either one or two places will be available in the 2020 Série D, depending on whether the CBF decides to reduce the number of participants from 68 to 40. An additional trophy, known as the Campeonato do Interior Gaúcho, is awarded to the best-placing team outside the final. The Campeão do Interior also cannot be won by Grêmio or Internacional.
