The title marked del Potro's first at Masters 1000 level, having lost in the final on three previous occasions, including the Indian Wells final in 2013.
Federer and Rafael Nadal were in contention for the ATP No. 1 singles ranking at the start of the tournament. Federer retained the top ranking by reaching the semifinals.
