2017 Speaker of the United States House of Representatives election


The 2017 Speaker of the United States House of Representatives election took place on January 3, 2017, on the opening day of the 115th United States Congress, two months after the United States 2016 elections. This was 125th Speaker of the House of Representatives election since the office was created in 1789. The incumbent speaker, Paul Ryan, received 239 votes, a majority of the votes cast and was re-elected speaker.
Immediately after the election, the Dean of the United States House of Representatives, John Conyers, administered the oath of office to the speaker. Ryan in turn administered the oath of office en masse to the rest of the members of the House of Representatives.

Ron Kind of Wisconsin voted for Jim Cooper;
Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona voted for John Lewis;
Thomas Massie of Kentucky voted for Dan Webster.
