defeated Martin Verkerk in the final 6–1, 6–3, 6–2 to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 2003 French Open. Albert Costa was the defending champion, but was defeated in the semifinals by Ferrero.
As of 2019, this is the most recent Grand Slam event Roger Federer lost in the first round. As of 2019, this is also the most recent French Open to feature an American player in the quarterfinals of the men's singles.
