2002 French Open – Women's Singles
defeated her sister Venus Williams in the final 7–5, 6–3 to win the Women's Singles tennis title at the 2002 French Open. This was also her first step towards completing her first. Jennifer Capriati was the defending champion, but she lost to Serena Williams in the semifinals, in what was a rematch of a match from the previous year's quarterfinals.
This tournament was notable for being the first Grand Slam in which future world No. 2 Vera Zvonareva competed in the main draw. She drew Serena Williams in the fourth round, and was defeated.Seeds
