1972 US Open – Men's Singles


defeated Arthur Ashe 3–6, 6–3, 6–7, 6–4, 6–3 in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 1972 US Open. Stan Smith was the defending champion but lost in the quarterfinals to Arthur Ashe.
12-time major champion Roy Emerson made his last appearance at a Grand Slam tournament, losing in the 1st round to compatriot Fred Stolle.
